The Winter of My Discontent

Sirens wail, are you listening
In the Ward, snow is glistening
A beautiful view, 'though me without you
Walking in a winter wonderland

Gone away is the heron
Here to stay solo Karen
No cause for a song as I go along
Walking in a winter wonderland

On Brown's Island, I can see a snowman
And perhaps built to be Parson Brown
He'll ask if I'm married, I'll say no, man
Though Mom says she can't die until I am

Later on, I'll feel dire
Wanting for talk, not desire
To face once again the want of that friend
Walking in a winter wonderland

Sirens wail, are you listening
In the Ward, streets are glistening
A monochrome view, still moi without vous
Walking in a winter wonderland

All alone on the pipeline
Still it feels like a lifeline
Thinking of this song as I go along
Walking in a winter wonderland

In Jackson Ward, I could build a snowman
And pretend that he's the one I seek
I'll have lots to say to Mr. Snowman
Until my neighbors take me for a freak

When it snows, ain't it thrilling
Though my legs got a chilling
We'll talk and we'll play, the fun, brainy way
Walking in a winter wonderland
Walking in a winter wonderland

  2. That's pretty clever what you did to this song! I only know you from reading this blog but I never got an impression you wanted to get married.

  3. That tugged at my heartstrings in several different ways. The last line was particularly disturbing:

"Waling: a streak or ridge made on the skin especially by the stroke of a whip : welt;"

or was that just a typo? (I hope!)

  4. Thank you. It really did just come to me as I was walking yesterday in the snow. And, no indeed, I have no desire to get married! Even my Mom has begun to give up on that...finally!

  5. Professor,
It was indeed a typo, one since corrected. Mocking my blue mood in a holiday vein was more my intent than tugging on heartstrings...
Happy to see you're still reading.

  10. There is something hugely missing from my daily life and that is connecting with you through your blogs. Everything ok? Anything I can do? I miss you and it makes me feel a wee bit closer to you to read about your antics and adventures each day because I can hear your voice and see your smart-ass grin!

  11. It's March. Winter's over. No more discontent. There are buds on the trees! Friends, Richmonders and countrymen desire to once again lend you their ears. If you don't come back soon, I will be forced to continue to butcher Shakespeare quotes.

  12. I have been considering returning to the blogging fold and your seasonal reasoning is just one more brick in the wall.

Stay tuned and I'll see what I can do.
